Something I noticed…

Just a curiosity… a peculiarity in this week’s WTA rankings. Not a flaw, though, because I think the current system is fair and works. And until someone comes up with something better, I’ll keep supporting it.

But thing is, Samantha Stosur failed – to defend her Charleston title. This means she hasn’t won a title in the past 52 weeks – or 12 months, or a year, as you please. So, I was looking at the WTA rankings and noticed that five top-15 players haven’t won a singles title in the past year or so, and two of them are inside the top-10.

As I said before, this is no big deal. Just a curiosity, an useless fact. The top-15 players and the titles they hold right now.

Caroline Wozniacki – 8 – Copenhagen, Montreal, New Haven, Beijing, Tokyo, Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston

Kim Clijsters – 4 – Cincinnati, US Open, Masters, Australian Open

Vera Zvonareva – 1 – Doha

Francesca Schiavone – 2 – Barcelona and Roland Garros

Victoria Azarenka – 4 – Stanford, Moscow, Miami, Marbella

Samantha Stosur – None

Li Na – 2 – Birmingham, Sydney

Maria Sharapova – 1 – Strasbourg

Serena Williams – 1 – Wimbledon

Shahar Peer – Null – Last title: Guangzhou ‘09

Marion Bartoli – Zero – Last title: Monterrey ‘09

Svetlana Kuznetsova – 1 – San Diego

Agnieszka Radwanska – Love – Last title: Pattaya ‘08

Venus Williams – The same amount of games you win when you get bageled – Last: Acapulco ‘10

A comparison? Ok. Tomas Berdych, who last lifted a trophy in Munich ’09, is the only ATP top-15 without a title in the last 15 weeks. When it comes to the top-20, Tsonga is the only other player that blanked in 2010.

In the WTA top-20, Andrea Petkovic (no.19) and Flavia Penetta (no.20) also won’t have to defend a title this year.
